Send Flowers for Valentines!

Of course special occasions are a wonderful time to buy flowers. And no other occasion is more closely associated with flowers than Valentine's Day. The traditional Valentine's Day flowers and card or chocolates can be for a friend, loved one or that very special someone. Flowers from a "secret admirer" are always a wonderful touch and can make someone feel very special indeed.

Where Does Valentines Day Come From?

Valentine's Day has been with us in some form or other for many centuries. According to some, St.Valentine was martyred for helping Christians escape the harsh treatment of the Romans under the Emperor Claudius II. The story goes that the Emperor banned marriage for young men, who were his greatest source of soldiers. Valentine continued to perform marriage rights for young couples in secret. When Valentine was found out, Claudius ordered him put to death. Still other stories have it that St. Valentine was jailed along with other Christians, and while in Prison he fell in love with the daughter of one of his jailers. He would write short love letters to her on any scrap of parchment that he could get hold of... thus beginning the tradition of sending a card. Sometime near the end of the 18th century, small gifts and flowers began to accompany the cards.

Roses: the Flower Symbol of Love

These days, Valentine's day and flowers, particularly the Red Rose, are so closely linked together that one can hardly think of the two apart. Yet roses have long been known as the flower of love. This is true as far back as King Solomon. Indeed, the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra was reputed to have the floors and hallways of her palace sprinkled with rose petals 18 inches deep and had the fountains filled with rose water before receiving the Roman General Mark Antony (or was that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton?).

Today there are more roses purchased around Valentine's Day than at any other time of the year. Many men seldom think of flowers... but you can be sure Valentine's Day is an exception. (In fact the smart one's will send flowers more often!) Women too have begun to reciprocate. It's not unusual to see a man receiving a bouquet of flowers at Valentine's Day or a birthday or simply "just because."

Let our experienced and talented staff at Select Roses locations in Cole Harbour Dartmouth or Rockingham Ridge Halifax help you make someone's day very special. Both you and the lucky recipient will be glad you did!
